When the catastrophic earthquake rumbled through Haiti before dinnertime Tuesday, it set in motion a response among the networks molded in part by the South Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina six years ago.

The Federal Aviation Administration halted all civilian flights to Haiti for nearly eight hours Thursday while some aircraft spent hours circling awaiting permission to land at an already crowded airport that lacked sufficient supplies for refueling.

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) – Crumbled walls cover priceless works of Haitian art. There are dead bodies outside the entrance. Food will run short soon.

Haiti's Port-au-Prince airport, now critical for the quick delivery of supplies and aid, was an uncontrolled "mess" when the Air Force arrived Wednesday night to rehabilitate the facility, according to the commander of one of the Air Force's elite special operations units send to Haiti.

In the wake of the earthquake in Haiti, George Clooney and other celebrities are signing on for a telethon to aid the devastated island nation.

Following the devastating earthquake that wrecked Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, the once-elegant Hotel Villa Creole, set on a hillside with lush tropical vegetation, is still, astonishingly, open for business.
